Early African Reed Instrument With Ornate Hand Carved Horn

ffered is a very rare antique Nzumari ( "African Oboe" )  woodwind instrument. This survivor is clearly a hand made, hand carved antique. The mouthpiece has a lip shaped mouthguard surrounding the hollowed instrument tube . A reed (not included) is inserted within the horn at this end. The main body of the Oboe has 4 finger holes and a scrolling floral design carved into the wood. It is flanked on both ends with tightly wrapped twine like vegetation. This wrapped  "twine" is sometimes known to affix feathers or other adornments to the instrument.  The most impressive part of the Nzumari is the end horn. It is an intricately carved animal horn- perhaps bovine in nature. The carving depicts a large snake slithering through what is probably water or vegetation.  It is difficult to date but mid 1800's is conservative.  Very rare instrument from the west African coastal area.
